Content & Editorial Director
reports to Executive Director

Gray Area is a San Francisco-based community hub focused on creative action for social transformation – applying art towards engaging with some of the most complex challenges facing our world. Through events, education, and research, we bring together the diverse cultures and communities of the Bay Area to experience, discuss, and experiment with ways to engage directly with the critical issues facing our rapidly changing world.

Gray Area is seeking a Content & Editorial Director responsible for strategic development of Gray Area’s communications, overseeing how we plan, prioritize, create, and measure content across all channels. The director is a key partner for communications and creative, leading development of content, and ensuring mission alignment. This role is for a creative enthusiast ready to envision bold strategic planning, creative execution, and building our audience to ensure content is driving the success of our programs.

This position is located in San Francisco; while Gray Area complies with local and state health ordinances, this position will work remotely. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culturally diverse team.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Content Strategy
  • Work with the Executive and Associate Director to develop and execute a strategic communications plan supporting long-term community engagement strategies
  • Partner with leadership and internal teams to leverage existing content to achieve strategic goals while assessing need for development of new content to meet any opportunities
  • Develop strategic and tactical outreach initiatives to strengthen Gray Area’s community
  • Collaborate across the organization to comprehend and communicate priorities, key positioning messages, and value propositions
  • Make storytelling a core part of our content strategy, crafting cohesive messaging to communicate our diverse offerings across all channels
  • Manage writing, editing, curation, scheduling and publishing original social media and editorial content that reflects our voice and reinforces our mission
  • Create a deeply audience-centric approach to content marketing
  • Ability to analyze and present content and social performance data and insights
  • Manage public relations partnerships and database, overseeing outreach to writers and editors for new initiatives
  • Define editorial guidelines and best practices for maintaining consistency, concision, and cohesion
  • Work across teams to develop standards, processes, and standard methodologies for content creation, maintenance, and archiving
  • Manage freelance writers, and edit work from other contributors as needed
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years experience in content strategy, editorial, and marketing
  • Write clean, concise, well-polished copy (sample required)
  • Proven track record in creating strategic digital marketing campaigns to grow an audience for a cross-sector brand
  • Self-starter with strong multitasking capabilities and a positive approach to problem solving
  • Ability to take initiative while working individually and collaboratively
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with a great attention to detail
  • Strong attention design, aesthetics, typography and composition
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and ability to learn new tools and systems quickly
  • Experience with email newsletter, CMS, and analytics tools, including Mailchimp, WordPress, and Google Analytics
  • Photography and video editing skills a plus
  • Passion for art, emerging platforms, digital culture, and technology
