Ken Murphy

Ken Murphy is an artist, musician, programmer, and tinkerer. He was a recent Artist in Residence at the Exploratorium, where he produced a time-lapse archive of human and natural processes in the Bay Area, presented as an exhibit in the museum’s Observatory galley. Ken often takes a non-traditional approach to time-lapse photography, playing with the format to create visualizations that span long periods of time. For example, his project, “A History of the Sky” presents a mosaic of the sky, clouds, weather, and light over the course of the year, and his panoramic time-lapse work uses a single camera and a motorized tripod to create 360-views that stretch visually across time.

Earlier work includes the very low tech electro-mechanical “Blinkybugs, “a geeky, creative afternoon project that was eventually published as a combo book and kit. He’s also written for Popular Science, Make, and Popular Mechanics magazines.
