About the Initiative

CREATIVE CURRENCY aims to envision, prototype, and deploy innovative solutions that address systems of exchange in underserved communities.

The initiative will join leading developers and designers with experts in social finance, local currencies, crowdfunding, sharing platforms, job resources, and the new economy to rapidly develop tools to address critical needs in San Francisco’s Central Market/Tenderloin community.

Informed and advised by dozens of San Francisco local community service organizations, the initiative will address pressing questions such as:

How can financial data empower low-income residents?

How can local currencies support local businesses and community organizations?

How can sharing platforms be tailored to fit the needs of under-served communities?

How can tools like crowdfunding and microcredit be put to work for social service organizations and individuals alike?

Creative Currency launches April 27th-29th with a three-day Collaboration Weekend at The Hub in San Francisco. More than a typical hackathon, this Collaboration Weekend will begin a 6-month acceleration process including support, mentorship, and community feedback. And to ensure the projects are rooted in existing community input and initiatives, we’ve conducted dozens of on-the-ground interviews with local leaders and compiled them into a Community Brief to inform project teams.

Projects from the weekend will be presented at Creative Currency Demo Day in July, where they’ll be judged on their usability, relevance, and impact potential. Winning projects will be given seed funding to continue iterative development and trial deployment. Top projects will be showcased October 1st – 4th at SOCAP12, the world’s largest gathering of social investors and entrepreneurs.

With this unprecedented collaboration of organizational leaders in creative technology, social enterprise, civic innovation, community development, new economics, and financial services, we intend to foster world-leading projects with lasting impact.
