Sense Hacking Workshop

Overview

Traditionally, the human experience has been defined through five recognized senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. But these senses are not as concrete as we may believe, and advances in neuroscience and technology may give us a far broader perspective.

This workshop invites you to investigate the five senses and explore how they can be hacked in different ways. Scientists have explored how the brain’s neuroplasticity (the ability to change and adapt) can expand and augment our senses. Innovations in technology and a deeper understanding of how our senses work are allowing us to fundamentally change our perception of the world. This opens up the tantalizing possibility of augmenting our perceptual experience with sensory inputs previously out of reach.

Workshop Outline

Humans have five senses – sight, touch, taste, smell and sound. But what if technology can allow us to experience these senses in a new way or even gain new senses?

Together we will explore our senses in different playful experiences and test our imagination by hacking them.

Erika Marthins

Erika Marthins aims to explore and question the intersection of food and technology and is seeking to reconsider our relationship with new technology. In her work she explore the concept of augmented food and the sensory spectacular which challenges our perception of food. Her work speculates on the future and aims to expand the boundaries of possibilities by exploring new solutions for future problems. Erika has exhibited at museums, festivals, institutes across the world such as Google, Vitra Design Museum, Milan Design Week & Space10 and has spoken at Singularity University, IDEO, swissnex San Francisco. Her great passion for design and innovation is what inspires her to think about our relationship with technology in the world of tomorrow.
