Neal Coghan

‘They say I’m a rapper and I say no’

Neal studied Graphic Design at Sheffield Hallam University where he built up a passion for design, illustration and animation. Graduating in the summer of 2008, it was possibly one of the worst times as a graduate to get a job – seeing as the recession was ‘hitting the fan’. Fortunately for him his work was spotted at D&AD’s ‘New Blood’ exhibition and from there he landed a job as a motion designer at the UK’s biggest ad agency – AMV BBDO.

Whilst there he worked across several platforms, from illustrations and branding, to animations for online campaigns and also a spot of interface design for an iPhone game that’s managed to pick up several awards here and there. He was also a key part in the LAB’s re-brand during 2011 – designing the logo and a large set of idents.

Aside from his in-house work, he managed to find time to work on many external projects – several being competition based. His project ‘Tasty Visuals’ has made the most waves so far, being featured in OneDotZero’s ‘Wow and Flutter’ 2011, and is still being shown in festivals around the world today.

He is now the company director of Aszyk (say what?) – a small design studio he is using to push the illustrative side of his work, whether it’s part of a website, interface design or animation for a brand. All this hard work sitting in front of a computer is contrasted by his live performances – playing visuals alongside DJs & musicians using a laptop, an iPad and a bit of fancy fingerwork.
