Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco presents ‘The Two Escobars’
The Two Escobars
Dir. Jeff Zimbalist, Michael Zimbalist
What’s that? You missed your chance to catch The Two Escobars during its wildly successful run at Kabuki in San Francisco? You lamented not being in Los Angeles when CS:LA presented it there in early November?
Wipe those tears my friend. Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco is proud to bring Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s documentary back to the bay! As GQ Magazine puts it, The Two Escobars is “Spectacular… a horrifying, mesmerizing portrait of Colombian narco-terrorism, and its relationship to soccer… This is not Vinny Chase’s Medellin; it’s a compelling piece of work about drugs, and murder, and sports.”
That’s right. Drugs. Murder. AND sports. Plus, as usual, we’ll have booze, prizes, good-looking folk, and witty repartee. A 5 buck donation is all it takes.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Despite the ominous weather, the inaugural event for Cinema Speakeasy San Francisco went down as successfully as the Giants clinching a spot in the World Series. Gray Area first-timers experienced the aural and sometimes tactile Milieux Sonores exhibit as they drank and mingled, waiting for the main event to begin: Grace, by Paul Solet. The Sundance darling and Grimmy winner, lauded by horror blogs and the New York Times alike, was sure to incite a range of visceral reactions. As folks got comfortable, the room resembled less of a screening and more of a friend’s living room as a couch was pulled out and chairs were arranged askew.
The film began, and quickly moved into creepy territory: A 9 mos. pregnant woman gets in a horrible car accident, and is determined to bring her dead baby to term. Despite a still birth, this mother’s love seems to will her baby to life…a baby with a deadly appetite. New friends all gasped at the same places, warned characters “not to go through that door!” and collectively covered eyes. We didn’t just watch a movie, we shared it. And right before the bloody, so so satisfying climax, we all realized that this is what Cinema Speakeasy is all about.
And we’re excited to do it again.
