Seated Performance

Join us on Saturday, October 29, 2022 for a live immersive audio visual performance by Ancient Olympia based artist Thanasis Kaproulias (Novi_sad), combining sound explorations with digitally generated videos by Berlin based Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa.

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were three dangerous women with the head of a female and the body of a bird, who lived on an island called Sirenum Scopuli. All locations were surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Seamen who sailed near were decoyed by the Sirens enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast. With the irresistible charm of their song they lured mariners, although they were not sea deities. They were mantic creatures knowing both the past and the future. Their song took effect at midday, in a windless calm. The end of that song is death. It has been suggested that, with their feathers stolen, their divine nature kept them alive, but unable to provide for their visitors, who starved to death by refusing to leave.

Sirens is a project which explores the aesthetics of information on sound. Initially based on multiple ways of analysis in various types of recordings, this project has been developed and produced by applying numerical and quantitative data from periods of economic panic and major stock market crashes in history, on tracks commissioned from other sound artists and musicians.

Through Sirens, the flow of data was made audible by drawing the boundaries and possibilities in working with numerical elements, since the potential is relentless. These sequences of numbers revealed a huge variety of structures, which could be applied on the commissioned tracks. The ultimate goal was to perceive the multi–substance of the data that conquers the world of stock markets by applying it on sound. Data and information provide an indelible element which sits comfortably alongside words and it enables us to apply them on certain types of music, which circulate among texts on-line and off.

The outcome is a sort of soundtrack of these moments of financial crisis, as a musical alchemy, where sounds are emerging from numbers and human art is still blossoming despite the economic and social downturns. Like music is based on maths, so Sirens is our contemporary muse, emerging from numerical data and inspiring humans through difficult times. At the same time, the mathematical universe is encompassed by the infiniteness of arts and creativity.

Artists

Novi_sad

Novi_sad is the guise for Thanasis Kaproulias (b. 1980) who holds a degree from the Economic University of Piraues. He lives in Ancient Olympia, Greece. Influenced by the pioneers of audio assault, he began generating sounds in 2005. Amplified environmental recordings, drone manipulations, structured ambient soundscapes, microtones vs overtones, all come together in a hyper structure of iconoclastic form. Novi_sad’s artistic output displays a high level of technical ability, as well as a sensitivity to the nuances of location. The strength of his soundscapes works in the same elaborateness for the whole creation process, starting from a basis of very strong conceptualism, the intense examination of field recordings over the actual composition work, to the point of performing back the result onto location. Every sound that occurs is treated with a sculptural integrity and his sonic power operates on a level in which the audience participates as transcendental listeners. Novi_sad’s projects have been presented in various forms in cinemas, industrial spaces, theatres, concert halls, churches, museums, auditoriums, squats, galleries, in festivals like Venice Biennale Film Festival [Venice], MUTEK [Montreal/Mexico City], Lunchmeat [Prague], Eletronika [Belo Horizonte], FIMAV [Victoriaville], Transient [Paris], Gray Area [San Francisco], L.E.V.
