Spherical Lab hosts research initiatives addressing the health and integrity of Earth’s living systems. The Lab’s projects typically begin as research inquiries or creative technology collaborations, which then transform into public engagement outputs, such as microsites, videos, art installations, or publications. In collaboration with Gray Area, Spherical Lab is developing open-source data visualization toolkits that will equip San Francisco’s Mission District with knowledge about the water systems on which they depend (but which often remain invisible) and generally promote climate-resilient communities. As the state of water in California grows increasingly untenable, interdisciplinary approaches and community-led initiatives are key to expanding awareness and coordinating problem-solving efforts. In response, Spherical Lab is investigating how informal learning experiences can empower community members with the knowledge and resources to understand and positively shape our relationships to local water systems.
