Carey J. Flack

Carey J. Flack is a creative technologist and 7th generation Oklahoman based in Oakland, California. Her work investigates Black Southern ecologies and place-making, embodied memory, and cultural technologies — expressed through archival research, courses, slow craft, art, and ml/code.

Through @pressed.roots, Carey documents Black land histories across the American South. She also co-directs MEMORY PATTERN, a quilting course that explores and connects global Black textile traditions with the digital, for 80+ participants across the US/Canada. Her place-based work includes Mapping Black Oklahoma and the Clearview Historical Mapping project, two community GIS projects that highlight Black and Afro-Indigenous Memory and archive one of Oklahoma’s 13 remaining Black towns. Her first tiny land-based ML model, “Sketches From the Field,” explores the relationship between humans, machines, and nature.

Carey has taught at the School for Poetic Computation and was featured in Seventeen Magazine as a “Power Girl” for her technology work. She’s given talks at the United Nations, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and New York University.
