Daniel Stewart

Daniel Stewart has conducted leading orchestras around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Hessischer Rundfunk Orchester, Frankfurt Opern Orchestra, Boston Ballet, New World Symphony, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Opera companies of the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute, and Aspen Festival. In 2021, at the invitation of Esa-Pekka Salonen, he made his subscription debut with the San Francisco Symphony in a program featuring Beethoven’s 9th Symphony

Now in his 12th season as Music Director of the Santa Cruz Symphony, his transformative tenure has earned international recognition, and a reputation for collaborations with artists such as Yuja Wang, Berlin Philharmonic Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley, and over 30 principal artists from the Metropolitan Opera.

An accomplished violist, Daniel has performed in over 40 countries as principal violist of numerous orchestras including the New World Symphony, Verbier Festival Orchestra, and Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, collaborating closely in this capacity with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Valery Gergiev, James Levine, Kurt Masur, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Michael Tilson-Thomas.
