Shipwreck Detective (Devanand Bhat) is a San Francisco-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and middle school art teacher. Bhat comes from a background of performing in bands spanning post-rock, hardcore, industrial metal, and downtempo electronic music. His solo work as Shipwreck Detective features synthetic and organic textures using analog synthesizers, tape recorders, samplers, drum machines, loopers, and a dense combination of effects processors to create deeply introspective atmospheres. Bhat’s latest single, “Pomegranate Kiss,” is his first multitracked release since his debut album, Midnight Lace, in 2018. He is otherwise known for recordings of his live performances, which vary widely in instrumentation and are largely improvised.

Bhat’s other current projects include Bay Area post-hardcore band Grimoires, as well as being primary composer for the science fiction literary performance series Club Chicxulub. He draws inspiration from nature, film photography, 90s trip-hop, all forms of speculative fiction, water color painting, and long walks.
