The Open String

The Open String is a non-profit organization that delivers quality stringed instruments the frontline of a worldwide music education movement. It lends and donates young student instruments and other supplies to free programs that teach music to children in need across the world. Also provided are maintenance and in-the-trenches repair training for teachers and parents. Additionally, The Open String offers free access to quality instrument for musicians who depend on them for developing their talent and careers, from historic to modern to specially adapted violins, violas, cellos, and basses.

Youth Orchestras are correlated to improved academics, better communication, and decreased violence in the community. In troubled areas where poverty or war make childhood and life prospects bleak, playing string music offers a immense source of strength, joy, and hope that empowers change.

In 2015, The Open String provided nearly 90 student violins, violas, and cellos to four programs in the Bay Area: ELM in San Rafael, The Alameda Music Project, Music Team SF in South San Francisco, and Music Mission SF. Together these programs serve close to 300 children ages 7-12 from underserved communities.
