Strobe Warning

Gray Area Festival: TO THE MAXX! presents inventor and musician Onyx  Ashanti, known for his improvised sound and light performances translated from breath, gesture, and body movement. He is followed by experimental composer Ash Fure, whose immersive installations and performances explore the visceral physical force of sound as a sensory, social, and ecological experience. Composer and vocalist Briana Marela Lizárraga closes out that night with her gestural and lyrical song performances, undulating between generative and improvisational.

About the Artists

Onyx Ashanti

[Onyx Ashanti] is and has been an iterated social construct since 1992 when the name emerged as a means to explore the zeit geist, partly as [artist] through the art of street busking, which allowed for, partly as [anthropologist] through full immersion in the places, moments, people and phenomena encountered and partly as [designer] as means of asking questions and creating optimal, functional outcomes and artifacts. from 1992-2010 there was a steady trajectory toward being able to perform all elements of music production ever more efficiently and simultaneously, leading to the creation of a musical interface (2011) he dubbed, a "beatjazz contrlr". from there, it has become a multi-vector exploratory expedition: CAD design, 3d printing, puredata, raspberry pi computing. since 2014, onyx has lived in detroit where he iterates his sonologic, called [metabyte] and uses it to transduce information to and from his body from within an exomembranic bodymesh.

Ash Fure

Over the last decade experimental composer Ash Fure has refined a music practice that eschews the conventions of composition and notation, favouring visceral sonic experiences in which sound is sculpted, thrown and felt. “Without language, people presume music is abstract,” she notes, “but I actually don’t feel it as abstract at all. I feel it as a really concrete and physical phenomenon.” With a PhD in music composition from Harvard and as Associate Professor of Sonic Arts at Dartmouth College and Co-Artistic Director of experimental opera company The Industry, Fure creates work and conducts research that explores the substance of sound.

Briana Marela Lizárraga

Briana Marela is a Peruvian American composer, vocalist, and performing artist based out of Oakland, CA. Using her voice as a focal point, she makes use of visually engaging elements of tech augmented gestures and objects to compose and perform her music live. Her gestural and lyrical song performances draw from elements of both experimental electronic music and vocal driven pop music. Using a visual programming language and machine learning, she is able to make custom tools to create compositions with varying fixed elements that transition into moments of improvisation. She was most recently a spatial sound artist in residence at Audium in San Francisco for their residency New Voices IV, performing her multi-channel piece live every weekend from February to April 2025. She is currently a Montalvo Lucas Arts Music and Composition fellow. She received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in 2020. Her newest full length release My Inner Rest, was released on June 6th 2025 via AKP Recordings. Marela has self-released past albums, as well as releasing records with Jagjaguwar, Surface World and PIAPTK.
