The second installment of the DATA/LOSS showcase series brings Portland and Bay Area artists together for a night filled with curated raw audiovisual oblations.
Set as an immersive, seated experience, we invite you on a journey of erosion that moves from dark industrial textures toward total decomposition of signal.
At the heart of the event lies the study and observation of impermanence of form, of stability as a popular illusion, and the impact of quantization of reality.
The visual aspect of the showcase is presented by Arson Rivvers.
Phase 1: HEMADAXIS (Katabatik)
Phase 2: MALARKI (Errorgrid)
Phase 3: NUNDALE (Errorgrid)
Phase 4: ERIC SCHLAPPI
Phase 5: THOABATH
The solo project of Guy Taylor weaves a sublime tapestry of aleatoric soundscapes, concussive bass and splintering percussion - transmuting synthesis and sound design into a surreal tale of dissonance and harmony. Now based in Oregon, Guy faithfully serves the Portland electronic music community at the synthesizer shop Control Voltage. Although Bay Area locals may remember him from I/O, his modular synth shop in Oakland from 2012-2017.
Malarki is an instrumental electronic music project that reinterprets the complexities of the natural world, in particular the tension between serenity and disharmony and the natural imbalance between creation and failure. Ranging in style from Rhythmic Glitch and IDM to Textured Dark Ambience to Intense Industrial Soundscapes, the music is a challenging and emotionally honest reflection of our place in the modern world. Created by bay area computer scientist Patrick Coleman, Malarki combines rhythmic ambience, abstract soundscapes, experimental sound design, and algorithmic composition. His music pulls from a multi-instrumental background that includes synthesizer, organ, violin, and bass guitar, as well as his research experience in developing creative software and novel user interfaces. He regularly performs live at bay area experimental electronic music events, and releases his music on Errorgrid Records and independently.
Eric Schlappi is a musician and electrical engineer originally from Phoenix, AZ but who has recently moved to the Bay Area. He has been obsessed with synthesizers since a young age and since 2016 has been designing and selling Eurorack modules as Schlappi Engineering. His personal music and synthesizer design practice are closely intertwined and focused on performing and enabling heavy improvisational electronic music. Hard kick drums, feedback, and movements between melodic and abstract forms based on the feeling of the moment.
Arson Rivvers is a multidisciplinary artist and technologist working with generative systems, embodied interaction, and real-time audiovisual environments. Their practice combines code based visual instruments, installation, and performance, using feedback, artifact, and procedural instability as core compositional forces.
Thoabath is the current incarnation of electronic musician Andy Way (French Radio, Maleficia, NF orchest, ex-Sutekh Hexen ect..). Utilizing modular synthesizers, vocals and various sound sources Thoabath is a project that conjures dense, heavy, nightmarish soundscapes.
