Introduction to TidalCycles Workshop

Overview

This hands-on workshop is a practical introduction to Tidalcycles. The platform enables making musical patterns with code, whether live coding music at algoraves or composing in the studio.

In this workshop, we will cover everything you need to get up and running with TidalCycles. Starting with the basics of installation and running the software, through to programming beats and manipulating samples, we’ll look at all the elements required for you to start putting together your own live coding sets from scratch.

This workshop is part of Algorithmic Art Assembly, a festival featuring talks and live music focused on algorithmic tools and processes.
* This workshop ticket must be purchased separately and is not included in the festival passes.

Cost: $80

Experience Level: Beginner.
No prior experience working with music and sound creation tools is necessary.

Requirements:
Bring a PC/Mac or Linux laptop and headphones.
Install software prior to arriving to workshop.

Workshop Outline

We’ll move from basic technique to hands on applications in your own creative musical context.

• Installation and setup
• Introduction to TidalCycles software and SuperCollider
• Programming drum patterns and manipulating samples
• Build up to creating your own live coding set from scratch

Heavy Lifting Lucy Cheesman

Heavy Lifting

Lucy Cheesman makes sound installations as part of creative collective SONA and performs live coded music using open source software solo as Heavy Lifting and in collaboration as TYPE. She also runs a record label called Pickled Discs which is dedicated to promoting experimental electronic sounds. Lucy will be running An Introduction to TidalCycles workshop on Saturday March 28th at Algorithmic Art Assembly, with assistance from Kindohm and Spednar.
