Machine Vitrine

Gray Area presents Machine Vitrine: a new, on-going screening program in the lobby of the Grand theater on our 100” vertical monitor. On an irregular basis, select video-based artworks and interactive simulations will be installed for the public to experience. From fragments of video games in development, to new forms of experimental digital animation, to prototype generative software, and beyond.

This is our latest “vitrine” where we’ll shine a spotlight on new work developing across the Gray Area ecosystem.

Requiem Aternum

Tori Sommerhof
2026
Experimental video collage; found materials
Runtime: 15:43 (looping)

Do old symbols of the past haunt our subconscious minds?

This looping collage reflects on the everyday consumption and disposability of visual iconography. The piece utilizes hundreds of retro pages of print graphics catalogues as well as other collage materials that evoke a historical and spiritual understanding of visual data. Presented as a constant scroll, the piece reflects our current media habits. As users become ever more abstracted from their data, this work probes which visual artifacts remain, it itself becoming a relic of algorithmic decay.

As each frame passes, new symbols float across and out of conscious view. After a few minutes, once easily recognizable symbols of ‘contemporary’ culture seem alien, other; rendering a culture we once knew as somehow now indecipherable.

Daisy-Chain <><> Star-Connection: CHOOSE YOUR PRINCESS

Ambrose Trataris aka Cy Berspace
2026
Digital video: custom Unity3D avatars, live motion-captured choreography, hybrid virtual reality performance
Runtime: ~10 minutes (looped)

In August 2026, virtual drag artist Cy Berspace presented the world premiere of Daisy-Chain <><> Star-Connection, a hybrid-format, collaborative multimedia dance performance that incorporates contemporary choreography, drag artistry, 3D world design, and motion capture technology. Born from concepts of queer worldbuilding, the work is an immersive and interactive performance piece that explores the act of seeing and engaging in virtual and physical realities simultaneously.

Presented here are a number of performance recordings from Berspace’s various gigs as a virtual gogo dancer in the popular social VR platform VRChat.

Five Wells [video game excerpt]

Nicholas Delap
2025
Digital video
Runtime: ~60 seconds (looped)

Situated at 427 meters above sea level on Taddington Moor, Five Wells is reputed to be the highest megalithic tomb in Britain—a Neolithic chambered cairn whose protective earth mound was dismantled in the eighteenth century by local wall-builders, leaving its two limestone orthostat chambers exposed, oriented east to west, oriented toward nothing. What was sealed has long since been opened.

In this short video, representing one virtual realm from artist Nicholas Delap’s forthcoming game Ffynnon Gybi, the artist constructs a virtual analogue of the site using photogrammetric 3D scans and CG sculpts rendered within a real-time game engine. The result is a wintery, spectral environment—neither archaeological reconstruction nor outright fantasy, but held in suspension between the two. By transposing Five Wells into the logic of a game engine, Delap activates the site's latent condition as threshold space: a place built to hold the dead, progressively stripped of its concealing mass over millennia, now re-encountered as traversible data.

The scene’s central figure—the White Hilt—resists resolution. In its deliberate ambiguity it operates less as referent than as lure: something interred, something not yet drawn. The white of the Peak District limestone plateau, the pallor of winter, the handle of a weapon whose blade remains buried. The burial mound becomes, in this reading, not a tomb so much as a scabbard.
