Gray Area and TIAT are teaming up for Processing Community Day San Francisco.
On October 3, 2026, the Grand Theater will come alive with an afternoon of talks and workshops from 1 – 6 PM.
We’re celebrating 25 years of Processing, the creative coding platform that has shaped generations of artists, designers, educators, and programmers around the world.

Learn about libprocessing, the new experimental WebGPU renderer for Processing. Suitable for intermediate to advanced Processing users, this workshop explores new capabilities including video, particle systems, and PBR rendering using Python.
Experience Level: Intermediate–Advanced
Recommended: Laptop with a discrete GPU or Apple M-series processor
About the Instructor:
Charlotte McElwain (she/her) is an artist and creative technologist based in Oakland, working primarily in the Rust programming language with a focus on open source creative coding and 3D graphics tools. She first learned to code through Processing in 2009. You can find some of her work on her Website. or on Instagram.
Learn the basics of variable typography and how to animate it on the web with p5.js. We’ll look at how variable fonts can shift across weights, widths, and forms, explore their connections to concrete poetry and kinetic type, and use p5.js to create responsive, dynamic letterforms.
Experience Level: All levels; some familiarity with p5.js, Processing, or JavaScript is helpful

About the Instructor:
Ivan Zhao is a writer, designer, and artist based in San Francisco. He works primarily with nonlinear narratives, forms, and mechanics that reckon with digital, diasporic, and queer identity. In the future, he hopes to grow infinite hands to pet infinite dogs.
TIAT (The Intersection of Art and Technology) is a San Francisco gallery dedicated to creative technologists. This nonprofit space functions as an experimental hub where creative technologists gather for workshops, panel discussions, and new media art exhibitions. The space hosts gatherings like open projector hangouts and computational poetry events. It showcases transdisciplinary work, including bio-art, interactive installations, and generative media, providing a collaborative environment for practitioners to test ideas, engage with community, and expand their technical and artistic reach.
